Counterfeits of TERMINATOR® tape exist. Some look very close to the real thing: labels copied almost one to one, familiar colors, sometimes a large «ТЕРМИНАТОР» in Cyrillic. They are not genuine products, and relying on such tape is unsafe, since this is electrical insulation.
You can check a roll yourself in a minute. Below are the signs of a genuine product, photos of known fakes, and the trademark owner’s contacts in case doubts remain.
Signs of a genuine product
-
GS1 barcode. The label of a genuine TERMINATOR® product carries a barcode registered in the GS1 system to VIMAR LLC, the owner of the trademark.
-
TERMINATOR® only. A genuine label carries no other trademarks. If SPARKLUX, LIDER-PROF, MAXMUM, EXPERT, X pert TECH or anything similar is printed next to it (names listed for reference), you are looking at a fake that has nothing to do with tapes sold under the TERMINATOR® mark.
-
Latin characters only. The TERMINATOR® trademark on genuine VIMAR LLC products is never rendered in Cyrillic.
-
Paperwork with a customs declaration number. The products are made at manufacturing sites carefully selected by VIMAR LLC and are imported; sales are conducted via bank transfer only. The seller’s documents therefore always include a state customs declaration (GTD) number.
What the fakes look like
Every tape in these photos was sold as TERMINATOR. None of them is genuine.
A copy of the IZ 1920S series label, the design reproduced almost entirely. Authenticity is verified by the barcode: the genuine one is registered in GS1 to VIMAR LLC.
Another IZ 1920S copy. Hard to spot visually; the print quality and a barcode that does not belong to the trademark owner give it away.
The third-party SPARK LUX mark and «ТЕРМИНАТОР» in Cyrillic. Two counterfeit signs on a single label.
The foreign LIDER-PROF mark. Note the misprints in the Russian text on the label.
The MAXIMUM mark and Cyrillic «ТЕРМИНАТОР». Unrelated to the genuine product.
The X-PERT mark and Cyrillic again. A fake.
Cash deals with no documents
If the product is offered for cash and without documents, at a street market for example, it is most likely a fake. You risk more than losing money: infringing the exclusive right to the TERMINATOR® trademark carries liability with compensation of up to 5 million rubles.
Checking a marketplace listing
-
Study the listing. Compare the photos, the product name and the description. Several photos of differently named products in one listing, or a size that does not match the description, are a reason to walk away.
-
Read the reviews. If there are none, or they contain only ratings with no photos or real details, chances are high you will be sold a fake.
